HalaTuju

A community behind every student.

A community-supported pilot helping students from low-income households continue their studies at Malaysia's public colleges and universities — from pre-university through to degree — backed by fellow Malaysians who want to see them succeed.

Every year, promising students from low-income households earn a place at Malaysian public institutions — to pursue Pre-university studies, Certificate, Diploma and Degree — only to find they lack the means to make the most of it. This programme exists to close that gap.

The model is straightforward. Members of the community choose to support a student through their studies. It is assistance, not a loan — there is nothing to repay. Our hope is that those who are supported today will, in time, support others tomorrow.

Realise your potential

Practical support to help you make the most of your place at a public institution.

A community behind you

Your privacy, your control

Sponsors only see what you choose to share.

Can I apply?

Malaysian citizen who has just completed, or is completing, SPM or STPM.
From a low-income household — combined monthly income at or below RM5,860, the national B40 threshold (DOSM, 2024).
Solid academic record — at least 5 A's in SPM, or a PNGK of 3.0 or above in STPM.
Continuing at a Malaysian public institution — Asasi, Matrikulasi, STPM, Certificate, Diploma or Degree.
Reachable for a short interview — usually a 20-minute phone call in English, Bahasa Malaysia, or Tamil.
Willing to share progress — semester results and a brief update, so that support can continue through your studies.

Close, but not exactly? Apply anyway. Our bar is a little more generous than the headline above — especially on grades — so it's worth applying even if you don't match every line exactly. Applying lets us assess your eligibility; it doesn't guarantee assistance.

Please note

  • A pilot in motion: Expect some uncertainty as we get going. We'll be transparent about what we don't know yet.
  • No guarantees: Applying lets us assess your eligibility. It does not guarantee assistance.
  • Limited places: We try to support every eligible student, but places in this pilot are limited.
  • Be accurate: Honest answers help us match you to opportunities you're genuinely eligible for, and protect places for those who need them.
  • Trust, with light verification: We take your application in good faith. We may ask for supporting documents to confirm key details.
  • Under 18: A parent or guardian must give consent on your behalf before your profile is shared with any sponsor.
  • Confidential: Your answers are shared only with the programme coordinators, the administering NGO, and any sponsor you specifically consent to.

How it works

No fixed deadline — reviewed on a rolling basis
  1. 1

    Apply

Sign in with Google, confirm your HalaTuju profile, and submit. About 5–10 minutes.

  2. 2

    We confirm — same day

You'll receive an email acknowledging your application on the day you submit it.

  3. 3

    Shortlisting — within 48 hours

We check your results and household income against the criteria and let you know whether you've been shortlisted.

  4. 4

    Complete your profile

If shortlisted, we'll ask you to share a few more details and upload supporting documents (IC, results slip, proof of household income, etc.). We'll tell you exactly what's needed.

  5. 5

    A short interview

A brief phone call, usually 20 minutes, in your preferred language. This is to get to know you, not to test you.

  6. 6

    Ready for sponsors

With your written consent, we prepare a confidential profile for sponsors to consider.

  7. 7

    Matched and awarded

Once a sponsor chooses to support you, an independent trust foundation arranges the assistance and administers the funds. From application to award typically takes up to two months. (The foundation is currently being established.)

  8. 8

    Staying supported

Each semester, you upload your results and a short progress note. As long as you're progressing, the support continues.

Questions

This programme exists because individuals in the community choose to fund the studies of specific students. If you'd like to know more about supporting a student — whether for a semester, a year, or the full course of their studies — we'd be glad to hear from you.
